Alajuela is a good place to start your vacation.  It is conveniently located near the Santa Maria/San Jose International Airport.  Known for its proximity to many Hotels and Restaurants as well as the easy access to the country's main highway called the Pista.

Once on the Pista, you can head north from the airport to reach the Poas Volcano, Lake Arenal, or keep on going to Liberia and beyond to the beautiful Nicoya Peninsula and see the beaches of Guanacaste. 

Want to go surfing?  Then go west to Jaco Beach and stop to enjoy the Surf.  Then continue on to the South from Jaco to beautiful Manuel Antonio to see the ocean panoramic views as well as one of Costa Rica's most visited National Park where you will see many different kinds of Monkey's, Sloths, and Scarlet Macaws in their own environment.
